Kudos to the Gateway Mall Administration...

I got a call from Gateway Mall this morning. After I reported the lewd sticker ads posted in their CRs with my name and numbers to the administration yesterday, they assured me they were going to look into it. As of yesterday they had all the men's rooms checked and indeed they found the sticker ads behind the cubicle doors. They had the housekeeping staff promptly remove everything, and told them to be vigilant about such things during their routinary cleaning sessions. I'm very grateful to the Gateway Mall administration for their fast action.

Although this is good news, there's still no assurance that it's not posted elsewhere. I can only hope all of this dies down soon. I'm beginning to think I'm a weirdo magnet.

Victimized by a malicious prankster...

This is precisely why you should NEVER EVER post your name and any contact details whatsoever in public view on the internet...

It started yesterday. For some reason I was getting these weird text messages on both my Globe and Sun cellphones. Texts like "Hi", "Musta ka?", "Pwede ba mag txt-pal?". Why the sudden barrage? I was wondering. But I chose to ignore all the texts and deleted them from my cellphones.

Today I got a call on my Sun cell inquiring about an ad. I immediately thought he was referring to my online ads for the condos we were renting out. So I said "Oh, I'm sorry, both condos have already been rented out.". And immediately the guy on the other end was surprised... and said "Oh so that's it...". Then he proceeded to tell me he called my number because a lewd ad with my name and both cellphone numbers were posted in the "free" (not paid) men's CR of Gateway Mall. But when he talked to me he could tell that I knew absolutely...

JAPOK!

Japok is a small, open-air eatery just across McDonald's E. Rodriguez. There was a long line at McDo's drivethru so we just crossed over to Japok.

Their menu is very simple and straightforward, in fact the whole thing is posted on the counter wall so you can tell the order-taker what you want right away. I opted for their Jappy Maki (P70/4 pcs), which is crunchy maki topped with mayo and shredded crabsticks. Hubby ordered the Gyoza Bento (P65), which was comprised of rice, veggies, and about 4-5 big pieces of Gyoza. We also got a Miso Ramen (P75) to share.

The food was okay in general, except for the Miso Ramen. Although it came in a huge bowl, they should really have called it Oily Instant Noodles because that was what it was. Shredded veggies and instant noodle-like noodles steeped in tasteless oily soup. Suffice to say we couldn't finish it.

If you're eating at Japok, forget the ramen. Get a bento meal, it's really cheap and satisfying. Plus points: The staff was honest en...

Keirra was very excited all week long and kept asking me "Mommy are we watching the skating High School today?". Anyways today the answer was "Yes!".

High School Musical: The Ice Tour covers both HSM1 and HSM2. HSM1 before the intermission, and HSM2 after. The adaptation was perfect, they even translated a lot of HSM's signature dance moves on ice. Since we were seated at the Upper Box A area, we had a good view of all the formations but couldn't quite see the performers' faces. Keirra was convinced they were the original cast. She just sat there transfixed throughout the entire show. This is also my hubby Peter and son Kenshin's first time to see any form of Disney on ice -- Kei and I had gotten patron tickets to Disney on Ice earlier this year courtesy of Manila Bulletin.

It was a really great show, one that HSM fans would surely love.
Lifeworks Series: How to End Your Homework Hassles

I attended the Lifeworks Series: How to End Your Homework Hassles workshop by Working Mom magazine and Lifestyle Network this morning. It was held at the Richmonde Hotel from 9am to 12nn. I was finally able to meet and talk to Working Mom Editor-in-Chief Ms. Dedet Panabi. She's so nice and friendly -- we even discovered that we took the same course in Ateneo, and that she's just about two batches ahead of me. :D

I'm really glad I attended this workshop. Dr. Queena Lee-Chua is a brilliant and entertaining speaker, and as cliched as it sounds I really learned a lot from her. I get so worked up whenever I'm tutoring my 7-year old son but I was able to pick up a lot of practical tips on how to build good study habits. There was even a short Q&A portion afterwards so I was able to ask about some things in detail. I feel really fortunate to have had the chance to attend since Dr. Queena Lee-Chua only accepts 1 out of 25 speaking engagements, so it's not an everyday thing. I read her...

A Day in the Life of...

Most people are probably under the impression that I do nothing but write. Haha, I can't blame them. I write more when I'm stressed, hence the barrage of blog entries... this is really my outlet, creative and otherwise.

Last Saturday was particularly frantic. I did the payroll in the morning, left for Cavite for collection by noon, and went straight to Ortigas to usher in our new tenants by 4pm. There was no time for lunch. At about 6pm we left Ortigas to get the kids and then went straight to the christening party of my good friend's baby at Cravings in Katipunan. That was the only time I got to eat my next square meal after breakfast.

I actually don't mind physical stress brought about by things that need to be done. I'm usually more disturbed by emotional stress, and that's usually caused by flak from melodramatic people around me. I had just more or less finished such an episode with my mother-in-law and now I've just finis...

Polu Kai Grill

Had a late but nice family lunch at Polu Kai Grill yesterday. We were there at about 2pm, and there weren't too many people at the restaurant.

There were so many things on the menu that hubby and I had to take extra time to order. Our kids were getting antsy so we asked the waiter if they had any kiddie activity sheets or crayons. He promptly took out some blank sheets of paper and a tub of crayons, and the kids immediately got to work doodling and scribbling.

We ended up ordering Kimo Korean Beef BBQ (P410), Fish and Chips (P340), Jamaican Jerk Chicken (P425), and two bowls of Seafood Chowder (P165 each). The food was generally okay, my only complaint being the chicken's skin was burnt and bitter. Our kids wolfed down everything we put on their plates, and I really loved the coleslaw and the yogurt sauce that came with the chicken. I find most coleslaws too sour or overly mayo-ed but this one was just right. We also took home an order of their Pineapple Fried Rice (P150), which...

A writer's frustration...

Last summer, I responded to a call for contributors from October Eighty Publications' up-and-coming magazine entitled Cradle. It's supposed to be a magazine dedicated to the first 3-4 years of a baby's life. I submitted my CV and sample works to the editor-in-chief, who told me that if I do well, I would have a permanent spot as a contributing writer in the magazine. Soon I was given my first writing assignment with a deadline. I was able to submit my article in time, and the editor-in-chief acknowledged that she received it. I was never really given feedback though -- never told what they thought of my work, if it was satisfactory or whatever. I found that strange, but gave them the benefit of the doubt since they were a new magazine.

About a month later, I received an email from the editor-in-chief informing me that she was resigning from her post. They change the birthday pack every quarter.

Aside from the birthday packs, you get invites to special fun and educational activities like trips to Manila Ocean Park, SM Science Discovery Center, advanced screenings of family-oriented films, and lots more... all for free! Last summer they even had a series of free Trumpets workshops (complete with a final recital and certificates of accomplishment) for kids aged 7-11. I was not able to avail because Keirra is underage and my son Ken isn't really into performing arts.

No, I don't work for Skycable... I was just not expecting this. My daughter Keirra really wants to watch this. I joined contests on Smart Parenting, Total Girl, and K-Zone since they were giving away 2 tickets to 5 winners per mag... but to no avail. I had just about given up when I got a call today from Skycable that we won 4 tickets for the July 20 show. Four tickets na, Sunday pa! Now we can watch as a whole family, I'm so happy!

I would like to especially thank sis Yzie for sharing this contest at the GT Mom's multiply account.
The ETC All-Good Card

Hmmm... I've been seeing this ETC All-Good Card advertised on ETC for some time now. They never say how you can get one though... they simply said to log on to http://www.etc.com.ph to know more. Well I did just that and guess what? According to the website you have to stay tuned to ETC to know how you can get one. Well I've stayed tuned and logged on, and still no go.

I finally got my hands on an actual card when my sis-in-law, who's the marketing officer of MALDITA, managed to score some from an event. MALDITA is one of ETC's partner establishments and so there were some cards at their disposal.

The card came with a small booklet which listed all the perks you can get by simply flashing them your ETC All-Good Card. Here are a few of those perks to give you an idea:

TimeZone - P200 worth of load for only P160
Lancome - Once a month free makeover service and skin analysis
Ebisu - Free dessert for P50...

Video games are not evil, contrary to popular belief...

Many moms cringe at the mere mention of video games, simply because many children are so addicted to them. I'm not one of those moms. In fact, I spearhead the console-buying and game selection at our household. I can't even blame the kids. Video games give them the variety that their short attention spans require. When they grow tired of playing with a certain game, they can just change the disc or cartridge and it's a brand new experience. Of course I understand that there's a danger that they won't develop patience as a result, but I remedy that by letting them choose a game and telling them to finish it to the best of their abilities before they change. Or I limit the number of games they can change between.

For the purposes of this blog I will make an example of the game Cooking Mama: Cook Off for the Nintendo Wii.
TimeZone - Level M4 TriNoma Mall, EDSA cor. North Ave., Quezon City

We took the kids to TimeZone in Trinoma today for some arcade fun, but was rather disappointed by the place. We usually prefer Q Power Station in Rockwell, and why that is so just became more apparent.

For starters, TimeZone's air-conditioning could not keep up with the number of people who were there. It was sweltering hot, we were perspiring within moments of getting our TimeZone cards loaded. They only had four Love and Berry game machines, and they were out-of-date at Version 5 (Q Power Station branches are all on Version 6 already). All of them were packed with little girls waiting for their turn, so our poor daughter had to wait for about 30 mins before she could play... and it was so hot, her hair was already dripping with perspiration by the time she got to sit in front of a Love and Berry machine.

Our son had a slightly better experience since he prefers shooting and racing games, and there were a lot to choose from. If a certain game had too many people playing, he cou...

I've been playing since the Nintendo Family Computer came out in the early 80s. I upgrade, downgrade, and modify Sony PSPs for family and friends in my spare time... and yes, I also join video game high score contests for prizes -- I managed to land in the top ten high score table of the flash games for the following movies: Superman Returns, 300, Harry Potter, and Speed Racer among others and won some wonderful movie merchandise.

Our family's favorite video game console at the moment is the Nintendo Wii. Hubby, me, and the two kids usually spend Saturday nights playing together. We love Wii Sports, especially tennis and bowling.
