Blog EntryYES!!! I won in the "My SM Story" contest!!! Jul 12, '08 7:18 PM
for everyone

I joined this contest more than a month or so ago. They publish the winners every other issue so I was thinking maybe I didn't make it after all. My SM Story is about my mom's homecoming trips to the Philippines. She's a balikbayan who has lived in the US for more than 20 years and we're always hanging out at SM when she's here, buying various Pinoy knick-knacks and brick-a-bracks. Funny, na-extra pa kami ng kids sa photos because submitting photos taken at SM is one of the requirements of the contest... click on the image above for a closer look at the article.

Wow there's an online version too, with a pic surprisingly - http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Sunday%20Life&p=49&type=2&sec=47&aid=200807126

In case anyone else wants to join here are the contest mechanics:

In line with SM's ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations, SM and The Philippine Star are holding the "My SM Story" contest.
You can share how your family spends weekends at the SM malls; gimmick time with friends at the malls; or simply your adventures of yourself as a mall rat.
There will be 20 winners of P5,000 each, and your SM Story will be published in the Philippine Star every other Sunday beginning May 11, except for the month of October wherein stories will be published weekly. The last My SM Story will be published in The Philippine Star's December 21 issue.
Share your SM story in about 800 words with photos. Send your email to
philstar_smstory@yahoo.com; or mail it to the Lifestyle Section of Philippine Star at R. Oca Jr. and Railroad Streets, Port Area, Manila, or at the Publicity Dept., Bldg. C, SM Corporate Office, J Diokno Ave., Pasay City. In the provincial areas, send your entries through the PR departments of the SM Supermalls.

Blog EntryOMG!!! We won 4 tickets to HSM on Ice!Jul 9, '08 10:42 PM
for everyone

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! I was just not expecting this. My daughter Keirra really wants to watch this. I joined contests on Smart Parenting, Total Girl, and K-Zone since they were giving away 2 tickets to 5 winners per mag... but to no avail. I had just about given up when I got a call today from Skycable that we won 4 tickets for the July 20 show. Four tickets na, Sunday pa! Now we can watch as a whole family, I'm so happy!

I would like to especially thank sis Yzie for sharing this contest at the GT Mom's multiply account. Thanks talaga sis! I wouldn't have known about it had you not shared. :D

1. Roared like King Kong (into a mic!) in front of a theater full of people at SM Megamall...

2. Woke up at 3am to watch the NBA Playoffs live on BTV -- and I abhor basketball...

3. Jumped out of bed at midnight to scan my US visa and send an entry to Velvet's Sex in the City Fly Away Promo...

4. Coerced hubby into joining a one-legged embrace contest on stage at the premiere showing of "Lucky You" at Glorietta Cinema...

5. Wore kitty ears at a party for a headgear contest...

6. Sent in more than a hundred email entries in 5 days to Mega Magazine...

7. Wrote an essay in my brother's name for a mall essay contest, since previous winners couldn't join again...

8. Waited for the balut vendor all night long so I could buy balut for an easter egg making contest...

9. Wrote a full-blown essay extolling the virtues of Kris Aquino…

10. Put a smile on my daughter’s face via Adobe Photoshop…

Hahaha... yun na (for now)!

Blog EntryKeirra, my successor in video games?Jul 6, '08 9:09 AM
for everyone

Given my video game addiction, it's only natural to find several consoles in our house. I've been playing since the Nintendo Family Computer came out in the early 80s. I upgrade, downgrade, and modify Sony PSPs for family and friends in my spare time... and yes, I also join video game high score contests for prizes -- I managed to land in the top ten high score table of the flash games for the following movies: Superman Returns, 300, Harry Potter, and Speed Racer among others and won some wonderful movie merchandise.

Our family's favorite video game console at the moment is the Nintendo Wii. Hubby, me, and the two kids usually spend Saturday nights playing together. We love Wii Sports, especially tennis and bowling. Lately though we've been playing Super Smash Brothers, a fighting game featuring various classic video game characters from games like Super Mario Bros, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, etc. The game has numerous secret characters which you have to defeat to unlock. Last night, the challenger was Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid (I may as well be speaking in Martian now to non-gamers, but I have a point... promise!). Solid Snake was a super soldier. He moves like lightning, throws grenades, uses a rocket launcher with guided missiles... the works. Hubby, myself, and our son Kenshin all took turns trying to defeat Solid Snake, but to no avail. We were just about ready to call it a night when Keirra grabbed a controller and told us she wanted to play. We were like... what? You don't stand a chance against Solid Snake. Keirra insisted, and she picked Peach (pictured with her above), the princess in Super Mario Bros, to be her character.

Thus Peach in her long, frilly pink gown and parasol came prancing on the screen, controlled by Keirra. To our utter shock and disbelief, she started beating up Solid Snake until the referee called "GAME!!!" and Peach won. Solid Snake, defeated in the hands of a 3-year old using Peach, widely perceived as one of the weaker characters in Super Smash Brothers. Our jaws just dropped.

I wonder if any of my kids will love writing as much as I do...

I won my first Ipod back in January 2006. It was a shiny blue Ipod Mini, I won it from a Chronicles of Narnia trivia contest. I had absolutely no interest in Ipods back then, I was actually aiming for the grand prize which was a trip to Hong Kong for four to watch the Narnia premiere in Disneyland. Anyways, my younger brother was obssessed with Ipods, but being a high school student he had no means to buy it himself. I contemplated selling it for a few thousand pesos but got to thinking would a few thousand pesos in my pocket make me all that much happier? Hence I decided to give the Ipod Mini to my brother, whose joy was beyond words upon receiving it.

Fast forward to the middle of 2007. I joined a BTV NBA playoffs trivia contest, wherein I spent countless nights waiting for the live game which would at times air at 3am. The trivia question would flash during the game, so I really had to watch. Now anyone who knows me would know how much I dislike watching basketball... so it was really quite a task. In the end, I won a silver 2nd generation Ipod Nano among other prizes, which my mom told me she wanted. I gave the Ipod Nano to my mom, who's still happily using it right now.

Some two or three months after, I joined a Skycable-Cartoon Network text contest wherein the grand prize was a snazzy black Ipod Classic 80GB. I won. My hubby was immediately enamored with it since he likes downloading videos of all sorts from the internet, and this was the model with the biggest GB count. Again, I gave the Ipod to him.

Last March 2008, I won my 4th Ipod from the Pepsibilities writing contest. It was a lovely black Ipod Touch 8GB. Although I have little interest in music and videos (I hate wearing those ear plug things), this particular model had wifi. I opened the box, tried the wifi and internet capabilities, and was immediately hooked. Everyone in my family who had ever wanted an Ipod already got one, so this particular one was left for me. Computer geek and internet junkie that I am, it was perfect! Finally, God gave me one for me. :D

Luke 6:38 "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."

   First thought, ano kaya yun?

Anyways, I joined Velvet's "Sex and the City Fly Away Promo" last June. The contest entailed answering a trivia question and emailing them a scan of your valid US visa because the grand prize is a trip to New York for 2 w/ pocket money. I literally jumped out of bed near midnight when I saw the contest plug just to join! I saw my name on TV some 2 weeks ago as one of the first weekly winners, but they never did say what the weekly winners are going to get... I talked to Velvet a few days ago and they said I'm still qualified for the grand draw. Of course given my rotten luck with raffles eh... asa pa.

Went to GMA Network yesterday where Keirra was awarded the Barbie Mariposa doll for winning the Barbie Hot Wheels Mothers' Day Promo. We were told that they had received 600+ entries and in the end they had to choose 3 girl winners and 3 boy winners. One of the girl winners could not make it to the awarding but I saw on the paper that she had a Japanese surname. After the photo ops we had some pizza and drinks for merienda and I got to chat a bit with the Richwell and QTV people.

Our winning picture will be shown on QTV starting next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I saw an ad flashing on QTV a couple of weeks ago for the Barbie-Hot Wheels Mother's Day promo. You email them a photo of you and your child along with a caption of what makes that moment with mommy special. I sent in this pic and simply wrote "I gave mommy flowers on Mother's Day!". I wasn't really expecting to win because it was a full blast promo on QTV and there would only be six winners -- three girls and three boys. The girls would win Barbie Mariposa dolls and the boys would win Speed Racer Hot Wheels sets.

Surprise, surprise I received an email this morning informing me that we won! There will be an awarding ceremony at GMA 7 next week.

This picture was actually one of my non-winning entries for Market Market's Moments with Mommy photo contest.

I wonder if they'll show the pics on TV... hehe...

Every Saturday Manila Bulletin has an ongoing contest sponsored by Merriam Webster and National Bookstore. They give a word and its meaning, then you have to use the word in a sentence and email your sentence to info@nationalbookstore.com.ph. The best sentence will be chosen and will win a Merriam-Webster Compact Dictionary.

I joined the contest a couple of weeks ago because I wanted to win a dictionary for my son, so when the school asks him to bring a dictionary I won't have to buy one anymore, hehe. I won last June 7, 2008 with the word "ascetic".  The contest runs until April 2009, so there's still a lot of chances to win.

I can't help but feel TOTALLY snubbed, I don't think my entries were bad and deserve to be ignored. Oh well whatever. I don't really care much for anything at the moment anyhow.

Wow, I just found out today that my little boy Kenshin won a Granado Espada Limited Signature Edition set in a recently concluded K-Zone raffle. For those who don't know, Granado Espada is a Korean fantasy online role-playing game. There are only 9,999 of these sets in the world and it's worth about P2,500 at present.

Blog EntryYES!!! My Favorite Book Contest Year 7!May 17, '08 8:14 PM
for everyone

   Oh joy!

I was so happy when I looked at the Sunday Lifestyle section of Philippine Star today, May 18, 2008, and saw my published essay entitled "Confessions of a Contest Queen" on the second page. I've managed to win National Book Store and Globe's My Favorite Book Contest Year 7! This means I get P5,000 worth of National Bookstore GCs valid for one whole year... just in time for the school season. Thank you God, haha!

I won once before back in 2006, then they changed the contest format for 2007 into "If My Life Were a Book" and I didn't join, they reverted back to "My Favorite Book" for 2008 and I joined again...

I want to scan the essay but my scanner is in the office so it'll have to wait until tomorrow. It's actually posted on the Philippine Star website here - http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Sunday%20Life&p=49&type=2&sec=47&aid=2008051729 - but I'd still rather post the scanned newspaper clipping.

The contest is ongoing until December 2008, full mechanics are printed in the Sunday Lifestyle section of Philippine Star. Those interested can still join. They don't call or inform winners so you really have to check the Sunday Lifestyle section every week to see if you've won. Turnover is roughly two weeks. :D

I find it surreal that my essay was published almost exactly a year after the author of my favorite book died.

Update: Scanned and incorporated the article to this blog post.
